Heat Treating
Heat Treatment
Precise heat treating is critical to the production of quality castings. Our furnaces are certified IAW API 6A Annex M, AMS-2750, & AMS-H-6875. We meet most aerospace, petrochemical, nuclear and commercial requirements. Delta can homogenize and solution anneal at temperatures up to 2200 F/ 1205 C. We can normalize, temper, age, precipitation harden and stress relieve to satisfy our customers’ requirements.
Cooling rates and methods are as important as heating and hold times to yield the desired mechanical properties. Castings can be furnace cooled, air, water, or polymer quenched per specification. Delta uses King Portable Brinell Testers to verify hardness at multiple locations on castings to ensure uniformity. Our hardness testers are calibrated IAW ASTM E110 and ASTM E10.
Castings are Loaded into the Furnace
Molds are uniformly preheated and lined with a refractory mold wash
(white surface) to insulate the mold from the molten alloy that will follow. The lining process is subject to precise controls akin to the metal pour itself.
Castings are Removed from Furnace
The castings are then removed from the furnace and transferred to the appropriate air, water or polymer quench in compliance with the specification. Since cooling at the proper rate is just as important as the proper heating to a quality centrifugal casting, Delta Centrifugal® completes heat treatment of each alloy with the appropriate quench.
Quenching
The castings are either furnace cooled or removed from the furnace and transferred to the appropriate air, water or polymer quench in compliance with the specification. Cooling at the proper rate is just as important as the proper heating and hold time to produce the desired mechanical properties. Delta Centrifugal® completes heat treatment of each alloy with the appropriate quench.
Hardness Test
We hardness test using King portable hardness testers on each end of the heat treated as cast tubes to ensure uniform hardness throughout the length of the casting whether it is 29 inches or 265 inches long. Our hardness testers are verified in accordance with ASTM E110 & ASTM E10 daily.
